I thought the story line of Townsend's family was one of the interesting parts of the novel. He found out so much more about his mother and father's history and beliefs by visiting his grandmother's plantation. I think in this day of constant communication it would be hard to replicate the surprises that awaited Townsend in Cuba.

Yes! In working with some cousins to do some genealogical research, I discovered that my grandfather was not an orphan as I had been told. Instead, I discovered that he may have been sent to an orphanage when his father was jailed for bigamy and his mother could no longer support all of the children!

When I was a kid, I learned that my maternal grand mother’s first marriage was to a full blooded American Indian who was killed in a fight. My moms dad was a very nice, mild mannered guy, so I was always in awe of that little fact, which i learned about as a child in the late 40’s.
